About the Artist:

Ontario artist Ingrid Kostron has had a long career in the arts. Drawing since childhood and supported by parents in the form of art supplies and drawing classes. This interest evolved into a career in graphic design, illustration and web development.

Well into her successful career in design a bur turned up under her saddle; computers. “Computers are great tools with many advantages but I very sincerely missed the ‘hands-on’ aspect of being a artist” she says, “I was looking to fill that gap, put some hands-on fun back in my work and get back to where my talents were a craft and a skill set that was unique to myself as an individual”.

Ingrid’s work stands out as she changes working styles, her techniques range from pointillism to interpretive realism. “Art”, she says; “is communication - I like to change styles to enhance the ‘story’ of a painting … it’s a bit like speaking different languages”. This ability to change is also reflected in the media that is chosen to complete different works as Ingrid picks media that will help communicate the story or image she is working on.

Finding a topic with which to express herself wasn't that difficult; Ingrid has had life long passion and involvement with horses and riding. Taking lessons in both Western and English as a child and moving onto Dressage and competing as an adult. Drawing or painting horses was something she’d always done, she commented; “In meetings while other people doodled, or wrote shopping lists I would challenge myself by keeping myself on top of the meeting and trying to draw a horse in the margins of my notepad without looking down”

The creation of Equi-Art; a company which retails and wholesales a line of stationery products and gift items based on her equine art was the next natural extension for her career. “It’s very rewarding. I am ‘hands-on’ again and able to combine my skills as an artist, designer, marketer and print production specialist.”

When asked why she prefers to work in watercolor Ingrid responds: “On the one hand: watercolor is temperamental; it will do things you don’t expect”. There is a fine line between too little and too much and if you go too far there is no turning back.” “Much like horses”, she continues; “watercolor is a dance partner that you have to work with to be successful – it’s an adventure and there always is something new to learn”. "On the other it's 'goofy' and because of its unpredictability you can do some wonderfully surprising things with it"...

“Each of my paintings is an effort to communicate to the viewer to get a response.” “I want people to react; to smile, laugh, get lost in one of their own good memories or tingle with electricity”. “I know I have been successful when people have a silent moment with only an expression on their faces”

Equi-Art's product line includes items for everyone; from limited edition prints to fridge magnets; “I like art to be accessible so I make my work available in forms for everyone from the serious collector to someone looking to decorate their fridges”. Ingrid firmly believes that art enhances the quality of the lives of people in general - it should not be restricted to galleries. This belief is reflected in the diversity of products available from note cards and fridge magnets to limited edition prints to note pads.

You can purchase Ingrid’s creations from various tack stores in Canada and the United.

Ingrid accepts commissions; “I like the challenging… such as the historical commission I completed last year for the Royal Canadian Dragoons in 2006”. “But as my time is split between two companies… (she still runs her graphic design company; In Grid Communications full time) it’s best to contact me well in advance of any deadline”.
